OSU vs Michigan Blood Battle trophy

Dear University of Michigan Faculty, Staff, and Students:

This November marks the 31st annual Blood Battle between the University of Michigan and Ohio State University. This competition extends the athletic rivalry beyond the field, as students, faculty and staff donate pints of blood to save lives. This year, the competition begins on Nov.1 and ends on Nov. 16, and we are hoping to exceed last year's tremendous success.

There are many reasons to give blood other than the thrill of beating OSU. Nationwide, blood supply reserves have reached their lowest level in 15 years. The winter months are a notoriously difficult time for the American Red Cross to meet hospitals' needs for blood. Additionally, as we consider those affected by Hurricane Sandy, the Red Cross has an urgent need for all blood types. It is also important to remember that blood is needed constantly throughout the year to treat trauma victims, those with sickle cell anemia or patients undergoing surgeries or chemotherapy.

You can make a difference! One donation has the potential to save up to three lives. During last year's Blood Battle victory over Ohio State, the Wolverines collected 2,628 pints, and, in total, enough blood was collected to possibly benefit over 15,000 people. By donating, you help to ensure that local blood supply needs are met and that precious lives are saved.

To sign up for one of this year's Blood Battle drives, visit the www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code "goblue" to view all of the drives in the Ann Arbor area. If you have never given blood, please consider making your first donation this fall. If you are a loyal donor, this would be a great time to once again give the gift of life.

To celebrate the competition and thank participants, ARC will provide a Subway or Starbucks gift card to those who attend any of our drives on 11/1, 11/2, 11/5, and those who attend drives held at residence halls, while supplies last. Additionally, donors who schedule their appointments ahead of time will receive a Blood Battle wristband at all drive locations, while supplies last.

We know that donation eligibility requirements mean that not everyone will be able to donate. However, there are other ways to raise awareness of the need for blood donation, and we encourage you to be supportive in any way that you can. For more information on blood donation eligibility requirements and other ways to contribute, please visit donating-blood/eligibility-requirements.

For your convenience, the dates, times and locations of this year's drives are listed below. Your questions and comments can be directed to bb12chairs@umich.edu.

Please eat iron rich foods and drink plenty of water before you donate blood! Thank you for giving the gift of life. Bleed MAIZE and BLUE to beat OSU!
