The University of Michigan's Winter Term 2016 break is upon us! It runs this year from Saturday February 27 until Monday March 7. Michigan students will be engaging in every sort of break activity you can imagine. From fun in the sun, to resting with family and friends, to research and writing projects, travel, and more.

Many of our students will be engaging in community service learning projects in conjunction with the communities in Flint. I encourage you to read more in this newsletter about the university's contributions to finding solutions to this desperate public health crisis.

I also have a request for you – our U-M families and parents. I would like to ask you to consider how you might encourage your student to pause, rest, and rejuvenate this winter break. It's no secret that many U-M students are high achieving "leaders and best", but did you also know that many of them are exhausted?

Some of our students don't know that research has shown successful students tend to sleep more. Others recognize the importance of overall wellness, but have difficulty allowing themselves to prioritize self-care. As parents and family members, you can make a difference by raising the topic. You may have an opportunity to let them know that self-care can even be a great way for them to prepare for completion of their Winter 2016 term.

Finally, a reminder that many Michigan students are finalizing their 2016-2017 housing at this time of year. Student Life has abundant resources for students who wish to explore their options. You may read in this newsletter about upcoming Off-Campus Housing Fairs. You may also wish to explore Student Legal Services' housing resources, University Housing options, and Beyond the Diag for off-campus housing.
