It’s only been a few weeks since move-in, but for students and parents it's already a different world. That’s especially true if this is your student’s first year, or your first student off to college. And while your student is taking in a million new experiences and asking questions, I know that as parents you have plenty of questions of your own. And most likely topping that list is the question, "Is my student getting to feel at home?"

Now, there's no single way for students to become part of our university community, and that’s a good thing: the University of Michigan is diverse place, with people of different backgrounds, perspectives, insights and experiences. But there is one part of the university whose sole purpose is making sure your student is making those connections: Student Life.

In Student Life, your student will find programs and services to help them realize their potential, through personal guidance and connecting them with people and organizations that provide context to their academic and social aspirations. And we are more connected than students and parents often realize: the Resident Advisors and custodians in the residence halls, the staff in our dining centers, the advisors in the Unions, the lifeguards in Rec Sports, the people in our Dean of Students Office ready for your call, the medical professionals at the University Health Service — we are all on the same Student Life team, creating a network of support that’s all around your student.

So with open arms and passionate enthusiasm, we welcome your student and you to U-M. We are here for them. We’re here for you, too. This newsletter, Family Matters, is part of our commitment to help parents and students stay informed, keep in touch, and enjoy the passage together.

Please encourage your student to look at our website to become familiar with the many programs and services of Student Life. We also recommend that your student sign you up to receive various newsletters and bulletins from around the university, including Family Matters.  He or she must go to the Student section of the Wolverine Access website, click on Alerts, Bulletins and Newsletters, and enter your e-mail address(es). It will take only a minute to fill out and it takes effect immediately.
