Michigan Union

The food court in the Michigan Union, often referred to as the MUG for Michigan Union Grill, is a popular gathering spot on campus where students meet, study, relax, and grab a bite to eat. When students return to campus this fall, they will experience new renovations and new food vendors to enjoy there. The new MUG dining area will better meet student needs via structural improvements like a raised ceiling, LED lighting, and new tables and chairs.

With a desire to maintain the classic architecture of the building and follow sustainable practices, architects were mindful to preserve key existing design elements - old wood paneling was refinished, and pre-construction materials were salvaged. One special feature will be the addition of a community table built from an old carved wood table from 1911.

Popular new vendors available in September will include Ahmo's Mediterranean Grill. Local to Ann Arbor, Ahmo’s serves Mediterranean staples such as falafel, gyros, hummus, and pita sandwiches.  And arrivals during the 2013-2014 academic year will include Starbucks Cafe and Au Bon Pain Café Bakery.  Starbucks will give the first-floor coffee shop space a makeover while maintaining the beautiful architectural features of this popular study and meeting space. And Au Bon Pain will remodel the space where the University Club restaurant operated, adding a performance area for student groups and special guests. Both cafes will be open from early morning through late at night providing additional food resources for students.

From a student perspective "the new vendors are a positive change," says Adam Kleven, chair of the Michigan Union Board of Representatives who served on the selection committee. "Au Bon Pain wants to ensure student needs are met in terms of food selection and social space; Starbucks is undeniably popular and will increase the number of students who come into the Union."

And many of the newly arriving businesses are currently hiring.  So whether your student is working, studying, eating, meeting, or just hanging out, they’ll enjoy the new additions at the Michigan Union this year!
