Participating in athletic or fitness activities helps students learn skills essential to success as an adult - like teamwork. leadership, time management and dedication habits. Yet colder weather and limited hours of daylight can turn us here in Michigan into hibernating bears. Finding the time and energy to workout in already busy days -- filled with classes, homework, employment, student orgs and social life -- can be difficult. You can encourage your student to develop practices to keep their minds active and bodies healthy.

"It can be a struggle for students to stay active during the Michigan winter, but it can be done. As a parent, you can encourage your student to use Recreational Sports or other available facilities and classes to stay active."
There are several facilities on U-M's campus that are available for free student use. Participants can mix it up with drop-in recreational sports, fitness classes, and strength training. More options include:
Intramural Sports for fun, teamwork, and blood-pumping exercise. Teams for the Winter II session begin registration March 7, 2016 and include broomball, volleyball, indoor soccer, and 4v4 flag football. Intramural sports include a team or individual fee.
Recreational Sports also offers non-team activities for every taste and activity level, including equipment for badminton, boxing, handball, squash, tennis ... to name just a few. The North Campus Recreation Building (NCRB) and Central Campus Recreation Building (CCRB) offer running tracks, and the Sports Coliseum has treadmills for running.
Outdoor Adventures offers cross country and downhill skiing, ice climbing, winter camping, dog sledding, and snowshoeing - all terrific ways for students to stay active during the cold and snowy winter months.
Group-X classes are group fitness classes where students can drop in, including Yoga and Zumba. Classes are conveniently located in the central and north campus recreation buildings.
So inspire your students to go out, get involved, and get active! There’s no reason to hibernate!
