Learning activities are often sedentary -- sitting in class, at study desks, in lecture halls. Fortunately, the U-M Recreational Sports program can help your student keep moving otherwise. And there's something for every taste, interest and activity level.
"We have many activities students can get involved in when it’s time to take a break from studying," says Sarah Button, assistant director of Marketing, Sponsorship and Academic Partnerships at Recreation Sports. "These are great ways to unwind, relax and make new friends."
Adventure Leadership Trips help students explore leadership skills, team building, and the environment through adventure-based events and outdoor recreation. Students can participate in these year-round activities regardless of prior experience. Activities include rock climbing, camping, backpacking, and simply enjoying the great outdoors. Adventure Leadership Team programs are for any group (work teams, community organizations, even your family) that wants to learn, grow and have fun. Upcoming destinations include:
Manistee, Michigan, Sept 29-Oct 1, 2017. Travel along a scenic riverfront trail, with breathtaking views of waterfalls and fall colors. Includes transportation, group gear, and meals.
International Dark Sky Park, Michigan, October 6-8, 2017. Star gaze with telescopes, camp along Lake Michigan, hike amidst fall colors, visit extraordinary Tahquamenon Falls.
Group-X classes -- Cycling, core conditioning, strength training, high-intensity interval training, cardio, Zumba, dance-based fitness, fusion, and yoga – you name it, your student can do it!. Group-X classes are available to currently enrolled U-M students and are located at the Central Campus Recreation Building (CCRB) and Intramural Sports Building (IMSB).
Small Group Training: Students receive individualized attention from a trainer while enjoying the camaraderie of up to six of their peers. Classes include yoga, ballet and kettlebell conditioning.
Intramural Sports are for students who want to compete, make friends and have fun. Your student can start a team of their own or join an established group. Upcoming fall teams are forming for the mid-October to November season. Featured sports will be 3v3 basketball, dodgeball, flag football, table tennis and wallyball. Registration starts October 18.
Recreational Sports facilities: Students can work-out in the CCRB and IMSB, including weight training, swimming, indoor tracks and more. In addition, two temporary facilities are located at Bursley Residence Hall and Pierpont Commons during the renovation of the North Campus Recreational Building.
