Student Affairs - Research

I am excited to welcome you to the University. Over the coming weeks, if you are a first year undergraduate, you'll be preparing to attend New Student Orientation. I want to let you know about a survey we hope you will complete during that orientation.

The University of Michigan participates in a national study of higher education every year. A major goal of this research is to determine how our students are affected by their college experiences. Your participation will assist our University as we seek to understand our students and how they grow and change during their collegiate careers. This information is used to improve university programs to better meet the needs of students like you and those who may follow you at Michigan and across the nation. Nationally, this information guides both academics and policy makers in their decisions about the future of higher education. Completion of this survey is voluntary. All questions are optional; you can skip any you do not want to answer.

If you will be under 18 at orientation, we will also need your parent's consent. The consent form that students (and parents if under 18) should complete together and bring to orientation is attached to this posting.

If you would like to take a peek at the survey in advance, the survey may be viewed online at:

If you or your parents have questions about the survey, I will be happy to answer them.

I look forward to your participation in this survey, and through it, your guidance regarding how we may better educate you during your studies at the University of Michigan.
