Our Roots

Timeline

For the past 200 years, faith, spirituality, and religion have been a part of the rich and robust experience of student life at the University of Michigan. From hosting artists and authors to organizing protests and peace marches, religious life has richly informed every aspect of campus community. Our timeline tracks the evolution of the university, starting with its roots as a predominantly Christian institution, through its role as a bastion of Jewish student life, to where it is now, a home for over 100 religious student groups with deep ties to communities near and far.
