Let’s eat! How Students Find Food on Campus

When it comes to eating, your student can find a variety of food options that are conveniently located on campus.

Michigan Dining offers a multiple meal plans, which include Dining Dollars, that students can use within any of the seven dining halls or at quick-bite cafes. When possible, locally grown produce is served, including produce from the student-run Campus Farm. Students can find the foods they need for religious observance and for allergies or special diets.

For those on a tighter budget, the Maize and Blue Cupboard is available. It's a food pantry that has a new permanent location on central campus. It recently gained well-deserved university support, after previously being run by a dedicated student organization. For students, the shopping experience is just like at any other grocery store, except there are no prices. The Cupboard provides all kinds of food, kitchen and cooking tools, and personal and household items. And their mission goes beyond food -- they also provide resources, educational opportunities, leadership development and compassionate support to help students develop good decision-making skills.

During the growing season, Farmers Markets offer fresh produce for sale at multiple campus locations. Students can pick up apples, squash, greens and more from local farmers on their way to class.

Students can also find free food at many campus events such as UMix, a late Friday night tradition sponsored by the Center for Campus Involvement where students can play and make new friends.

An all-time favorite event is Welcome Wednesdays, where students can pick up a free bagel and coffee or hot cocoa. Due to renovation this year, these events will take place in the Michigan League on Central Campus and in Pierpont Commons on North Campus. The U-M Alumni Center sponsors Welcome Wednesdays and brightens many students’ mornings.
