Spring Break Already?

Although the school year just began, it's already time to start making plans for Spring Break, February 23-March 4, 2017.

During Spring Break, some students stay on campus to catch up on studies and rest. Others return home to relax, work and enjoy time with family. Some travel for recreation. And some choose activities that can have a profound impact and enrich their learning.

The following programs are available to all students through Student Life. Please note that most programs require an application and spaces often fill up fast, so you may want to encourage your student to check them out soon.

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a student-led service and learning initiative sponsored by the Edward Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning. It's an amazing effort involving hundreds of students on more than 30 trips and traveling across the US. They learn about and provide community service on a variety of social issues. Applications for ASB are due in mid-October, and the students use the time between their selection and Spring Break to build a strong team, research their issue, learn about the host community and raise money to offset trip costs.

The Michigan LeaderShape® Institute is an ethics-based leadership development experience coordinated by the Center for Campus Involvement. This interactive, energizing, and unique experience challenges and enhances students' perceptions and practice of leadership over six days of non-stop self-discovery. Participants learn from practical experiences that build leadership concepts and abilities. Online applications will be available soon.

Adventure Leadership Trips through Recreational Sports, provides outdoor educational and recreational opportunities for all students, regardless of prior experience. Trips lengths vary from one day or weekend trips throughout the year, to week-long trips during Spring Break. Led by extensively trained staff, these trips offer unique experiences to venture off-campus, learn skills and meet new people. Destinations have not yet been announced for Spring Break 2017, so check the website for offerings.

Additional spring break activities may be available through your student’s residence hall, academic department, or student organizations; check with these groups directly for opportunities.

One more tip: If Spring Break plans include air travel, remind your student to check with the AirBus, sponsored by Central Student Government, for a convenient and affordable way to get to and from Detroit Metro Airport,
