Does Your Student Need Health Insurance?

If your student needs health insurance, you’ll want to know that U-M is offering three opportunities to enroll. Of course, health insurance is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Michigan Medicaid Application Assistance
On November 10, 11 and 12, students can get assistance to check their eligibility for Michigan Medicaid and apply if eligible. Michigan Medicaid is a public assistance health insurance program for low-income individuals.

Students can schedule a free phone appointment with a University Health Service (UHS) staff member who is trained in Michigan Medicaid enrollment. There is no deadline for enrollment for Michigan Medicaid, however this opportunity is well-timed to enroll for coverage prior to 2021.

Health Insurance Marketplace Assistance
Students who are not eligible for Michigan Medicaid may want to consider purchasing health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

From November 1 to December 15, the Patient Financial Counselors at Michigan Medicine can provide free help to determine eligibility for financial assistance to pay for insurance on the Health Insurance Marketplace at healthcare.gov.

Please note the deadline is December 15, 2020 for 2021 insurance enrollment through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

U-M Domestic Student Health Insurance Plan
Students who are not eligible for Michigan Medicaid or for financial assistance on the Health Insurance Marketplace may wish to purchase the U-M Domestic Student Health Insurance Plan (DSHIP).

This plan is available for purchase only during the open enrollment periods, with exceptions for qualifying life events. The next enrollment period covers students from 1/1/21 to  8/23/21 for $1155. Students can enroll starting in mid-December, 2020 and the deadline for purchase is 1/31/21.
