Make It the Best Experience

There is so much more to gain with a well-rounded education at the University of Michigan than what is learned in the classroom. Engaging with the campus community through participation in events, volunteering, sports, and student organizations will not only add impressive items on a resume, but also help students gain a greater perspective on the world, and experiences for a rewarding life.

During the first few weeks of the term, students are often too overwhelmed with settling in to truly take advantage of some initial opportunities for involvement, but it’s never too late to get involved. Here are a few ways that students can get connected on campus over the next few months:

Join a student organization

Maizepages is an online directory of student organizations on campus. Students can search the directory by subject or topic to find student groups and the group’s contact information. By reaching out to the group directly, students can find out about any upcoming meetings.

Participate in FYE

First-Year Experience (FYE) is an office that creates a welcoming community for students in their transition to campus by engaging them in programs related to personal and academic growth, navigating campus resources, building meaningful connections with others, and prioritizing well-being. Check out all FYE offers on its website.

Attend events

Events take place throughout the year on campus focusing on everything from mixers to robotics competitions to musical productions and speakers. A thorough listing of events can be found on the Happening @ Michigan website

Exercise and socialize

Intramural sports are a great way to meet people. While many students sign up as a whole team, individual sign-ups are also welcome. While participating in intramural sports, your student can exercise and socialize at the same time.

Volunteer

Engaging in community service can be a rewarding addition to any college career. The Connect to Community online portal provides students with information about getting connected to volunteer opportunities in the area and around the world!

Be artistic!

U-M’s rich arts culture provides many opportunities for getting involved. A concert, play, dance performance, or exhibition provides a welcome break from academic work but can also help students to make connections. Students can learn more about ways to connect to the campus arts scene through Arts at Michigan

Find a job

Campus jobs provide students with the opportunity to make money and make friends. A full listing of student jobs can be found through the Student Employment Office.

Remember, it’s never too late to get connected on campus. If your student is having trouble finding their niche, be sure to send them to the Center for Campus Involvement for more ways to find their place!
