Student Employment Opportunities and Protocols

If your student plans to work on campus this year, there will be plenty of opportunities for on-campus jobs. With COVID-19, the workplace and employment protocols will have been modified for your student’s and staff’s safety. Student Life positions offer competitive pay, locations across campus, flexible hours to fit busy schedules, opportunities to advance, skills to build your student’s resume and the chance to develop lifelong friendships.

You can see a list of  awesome -- and safe -- opportunities within Student Life here.

Ellington Poston, a senior studying Psychology with a minor in Spanish, currently works in two positions with MDining: Student Manager at the Blue Cafe and Market in Mosher-Jordan and Student Hiring Manager on the Training Team.

Poston said there are many benefits to working while getting an education. “It is important because it keeps me in check; it reminds me that I have to work harder and do more in order to be successful. It is also important to be surrounded by like-minded students, who understand the difficulties and sacrifices that come with being a student-worker.”

Poston also said working on campus is a crucial networking opportunity. “Every time you meet someone new, you have the opportunity to network. Whether it's a student that comes in to buy coffee or a cook that comes in to get pizza on their break. I try to take every opportunity to get to know the people I cross paths with at work. This has opened many doors for me in ways I never would have imagined.”

But, students must also treat themselves with care, especially during the unprecedented time of COVID.  “Take time off when you can...As a student worker, it is easy to get burned out with all the work you must do throughout the year,” Ellison advised. “When you have the opportunity to just relax or do something you enjoy, do it! Recognize the times when you absolutely need to work and differentiate them from the times where you “could use just a few more hours.”

Here is some essential information, should your student want to apply:

  • If your student plans to work on campus, remember to pack the necessary documents to complete a federally required I9 so your hiring process is not delayed. A list of acceptable documents for this purpose is available here.
  • First time student employees must complete an online through Wolverine Access - Student Business. This will assist them in completing the necessary Student Employment Application, Michigan and Federal Tax Form, as well as direct deposit.
