Tips | Thanksgiving Break 2018

Whether students are leaving Ann Arbor during the Thanksgiving recess or staying local, Student Life offers information that may be helpful to you and your student.

For students traveling home for the holiday:

Lock up

The majority of all thefts happen through unlocked doors and windows. Before your student leaves for the long weekend, remind them to:

  • Secure their valuables such as computers, cameras, etc.
  • Lock all doors and windows to their rooms, apartment or rental house
  • Close window blinds and drapes
  • Consider taking jewelry, portable electronics such as laptops and iPads and other small valuables with them

Don't turn off the heat

  • Leave the heat on at a level that will prevent pipes from freezing and bursting
  • Close windows

Taking these steps will help protect possessions and avoid a very nasty cleanup—or worse—when students return from the break.

Fire prevention

Turn off or unplug appliances, including coffee pots, computers, printers, copiers and lights to avoid over-heating. This step also reduces electrical consumption.

Airbus to the airport

Central Student Government (CSG) offers frequent and comfortable Airbus service to students to and from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport for $7 - $11. For more information, visit http://csgairbus.com/, the CSG office or the Michigan Union Ticket Office.
