What Will Housing Look Like In The Fall?

We are looking forward to welcoming your student to the University of Michigan campus this fall. The health, well-being and safety of your student is a top priority. If your student is returning to the residence halls, new procedures will be in place for pre-move-in, arrival, and how room assignments will be made. Enhanced cleaning protocols will also be in place for the ongoing residential living experience.

Housing and dining contracts will align with the 2020-21 academic calendar year. Your student will have a home in Michigan Housing starting in late August through November 20, with the option to extend further as needed, before returning in January 2021.

Here’s what you and your student need to know:

Student community responsibilities
As part of the Housing community, your student has a responsibility to keep themselves, fellow students and staff safe. This includes:

  • Wearing face coverings at all times in the common areas
  • Practicing physical distancing
  • Maintaining good hand hygiene

These are three powerful things we all can do, and they depend on each one of us taking action.

What to do before arriving
Before your student arrives on campus, we are requesting that they:

  • Self-quarantine for 14 days, along with any individual coming to campus to help them move in.
  • If available, get vaccinated against the flu to help them stay healthy, protect others and support our health care providers.

More information about how your student can prepare for this fall will be available soon.

Room assignments
Housing assignment emails will be sent in waves over the next few weeks (not all at once), so if your students’ friends receive their assignment and your student hasn't yet, no need to worry —it’s on the way.

Most residents will be assigned to shared rooms, and most incoming first-year students will be assigned to double rooms (two occupants). Your student’s room with a roommate counts as a “household unit”. Physical distancing and wearing masks are not mandatory among roommates in the shared space.

Other parts of the residence hall, such as hallways and elevators, are “public” areas, and are subject to the same public health guidelines as other public areas of campus, such as wearing face coverings.

Move-in

Move-in for new incoming first-years students is currently scheduled to take place August 24-31. Your student will have the chance in early August to go online and select a time slot on a specific day. We are finalizing plans for move-in now, so be sure check back on the Housing website for updates, and we will share information in upcoming editions of Family Matters.

With your students' safety in mind, please note that virtual training for RAs and staff on use of Personal Protective Equipment and work with experts in CAPS and other departments will take place on how to support and educate students on the new guidelines. All staff will follow guidelines for working on campus, including temperature checks and daily health monitoring.
