Welcoming our second-year students to campus

The University of Michigan is now operating in its third century, and all those generations of Leaders & Best have resulted in countless traditions—on-campus rituals that many second-year students did not get to experience last year. These students began their university careers amid the ongoing pandemic, and we know that the lingering effects of this have deeply impacted many students and families, but especially the Class of 2024.

All second-year students are encouraged and warmly welcomed to our Welcome to Michigan programs, which are jointly organized by the U-M Office of New Student Programs and the Center for Campus Involvement.

Student Jobs on Campus

Some students (and families) worry that part-time work will detract from time needed for academics and co-curricular activities.  Student employees often note, however, that having a part-time job hones their time-management skills and helps them better allocate time appropriately for study and relaxation.

"Welcome to Michigan" events

Each fall, our campus community hosts a collaboration of events and activities to both welcome our new students to U-M, their home-away-from-home, and help them make a successful transition to the university community.

We designed these events and activities—collectively known as our “Welcome to Michigan” program—with your student in mind: we expose our newest Wolverines to our traditions and values, and introduce them to campus resources and spaces. Most importantly, these on-campus events offer students an opportunity to build social connections within their communities.
