Campus Safety is a Community Effort

The University of Michigan is a large, active community surrounded by a vibrant city.  Lots to do and places to go.  Classes, meetings, study activities and social gatherings occur across campus at all hours, day and night.

When Your Student Asks About Housing for Next Year…

Your student is likely already thinking about housing next year. Off-campus properties have begun marketing to students to commit to leases for next fall.  University Housing contracts will be available in January.  Costs, leases, location, safety and support are important factors to take into consideration.  Here are some points to help you discuss housing plans with your student.

ON CAMPUS

Students may apply to return to University Housing in a process called Housing Sign-Up. The process begins in January, shortly after students return from winter break.

Key Conversations to Have with Your Student

Research shows it is important to talk with your student frequently to keep those lines of communication open. Call, text, email, or talk with your student, especially during the first six weeks of the semester. Laying a strong foundation during this transition is very important to their academic and overall success.

One important component of these conversations is your expectations for their behavior.

Personal and Institutional Values

Take the Stress Out of Move-In

Even if it's not officially marked, Move-In is one of the biggest days on the calendar, for your family, your students, and the staff of Student Life alike. If you've done it before, you've had a glimpse of just how much happens over a few days, as the streets of Ann Arbor fill with students, parents, and beanbag chairs, crisscrossing town. If this year will be your first, you're probably deep into planning and wondering if there are any tricks.

Our Time with Your Student

Students are looking forward to Thanksgiving, the big break in their studies before the final stretch of classes, study, papers, and exams that mark the end of the fall term.  For most, it's time to reconnect with families and friends; for those who do not leave Ann Arbor during the holiday, there is at least the promise to enjoy some time to relax and refresh.

Welcome to Michigan. As your student joins their peers in the Class of 2020, you want them to get the best possible start to their first year. Will they fit in? Will they find a "home away from home"? How will they navigate the many "first time" experiences they’re about to have?

Wishing You a Peaceful Winter Break

Student Life at the University of Michigan is sending you best wishes for a peaceful and rejuvenating December! We hope you and your students will take this opportunity to relax, reconnect, and enjoy this break in the academic calendar.

Fall classes officially end on Monday, December 14, 2015 and Winter classes resume Wednesday, January 6, 2016. Until that time - have a wonderful break!

Academic Success Requires Asking For Help
